#FreeKesha Campaign

Ambria Garner, Staff Writer

Recently, supporters and fans around the world have grabbed the media’s attention with the new #FreeKesha campaign after the singer accused her manager, Lukasz Gottwalld, of raping her. This is only the beginning of a tragic story.

Kesha entered the music industry by breaking the charts with her classic song “Tik-Tok “in 2010 and became known for her glittered out personality and rock n roll clothing. Kesha has been working with Gottwald since she was 17 when she moved from her home in Nashville, to Los Angeles to pursue her music career. What seemed to be an exciting time for a young Kesha turned out to be anightmare.

In January of 2014, Kesha revealed that she had bulimia and later checked herself into a treatment center t0 seek help. While Kesha was in the treatment center, she then revealed that she had been raped, drugged and abused by Gottwalld for more than a decade. Pebe Sebert, Kesha’s mother, stated that Gottwald has contributed in Kesha’s bulimia by telling her not only that she needs to lose weight but also that she is built like a refrigerator.

Kesha should be enjoying her life like anyone else in the world but sadly, she has to carry the burden of having to face Gottwald. It’s almost as if she is under restraints because not only can she not get out of the contract but she isn’t allowed to release or make any new music just for fun. Kesha’s talent is being wasted in a sad and an unfortunate way and no one in the courts seem to be listening.

Kesha had finally had enough of the abuse and took to the courts to file a law suit against Gottwalld she also told Sony that she wanted to be released of their contract. Under her contract, Kesha cannot terminate or leave until she gives the label six more albums.

Kesha has gone through almost two years of trying to get out of the contract and on Friday, Feb 18th, New York Supreme Court denied the termination of her contract with Sony, resulting in Kesha having to continue to work with Gottwald until her six albums with Sony is complete.

This decision caused an uproar on s0cial media, resulting in the “#FreeKesha “campaign. Supporters and fans are outraged at the fact that despite the fact that a woman can be not only raped but mentally and emotionally damaged by her manger but just because money is involved, she is still forced to work with them.

I think that Sony should be ashamed of themselves for being so into money that they went even let Kesha go despite what is happening with her. It’s sad that she had to go through it and find the courage to tell but it’s even more devastating that she still has to deal with him.
