Paws or Claws: movie remakes aren’t relevant
September 27, 2017
Movie remakes of old movies are necessary to keep classic stories of the past.
Movies become classics because they represent the time period in which they were made in and tell interesting stories. For example, the original Star Trek really shows the social and cultural feelings during the late 60s while also having relatable characters with a memorable story.
However, it is no longer the 60s or 70s so the relatability of the characters and relevance of the story disappears due to the different cultures of each new generation. If Star Trek wasn’t remade it would be an amazing idea lost to time, instead it was recreated in a modern light with the original story influencing it.
This idea to preserve stories is represented through many movies and shows that have been remade. Just recently the 90s horror film “It” was remade to have better special effects and quality gore.
Many people, especially teenagers are turned off from old movies due to the special effects and acting. Yet with updated technology, we can take great ideas and transfer them into a movie where special effects can be taken seriously, not laughed at.
Old movies can be made modern through updated technology, fashion, and slang instead of alienating new audiences due to outdated language and clothing.
Acting has also improved in many aspects creating more relatable characters instead of hearing a cheesy line or drawn out line that usually would distract a person from the story.
Old movies and shows are often ripe with sexism and racism. Often there are singular female side characters or an ethnic minority character, and they are depicted as a stereotype, such as the damsel in distress or a black man depicted as the “Magical Negro”/black best friend. A good example of an actor that plays these roles would be Morgan Freeman who played God in the 2003 movie Bruce Almighty.
With remakes movie directors can take the story and characters without keeping the racism and sexism of the past film era by making the story include more diverse characters without stereotypes.
This problem is bred again from the fact that the original movies from the past and the way the world is set up isn’t relevant anymore. That is the exact reason remakes are necessary to keep old movies on the minds of each new generation.
