A quote taken from world-renowned psychic, Matt Fraser, describes inspiration after the death of a loved one:
“After a loved one passes, be encouraged by their passing and legacy. Instead of crying, live an inspired, spiritual, and happy life like they did when they were here.”
That’s the motivated route senior Anya Brooks took after the death of her uncle.
“My Uncle Randy was the one who influenced me to play basketball,” Brooks said. “When he passed, it made me push even harder to succeed.”
Brooks’ career began in sixth grade as she played in AAU for the Illini Extreme.
“I was a little nervous,” Brooks said. “But, being a part of a loving coaching staff made the experience so much fun.”
Her game has evolved to remarkable heights, as she committed to play Division I basketball at Illinois State University.
“I was so proud of Anya,” senior forward Rebecca Brennan said. “She works so hard on the court and is well-deserving of this honor. I specifically remember, after each summer practice, Anya would stay after to work on her ball handling and post moves.”
According to Brooks, she couldn’t be anything but thankful after receiving a full ride from a top school.
“I was offered by several other universities, but I already believe I’ll finish my collegiate career at Ilinois State,” Brooks said. “I love the overall atmosphere, including the coaches and players who’ve already made me feel like family.”
Brooks’ eagerness is evident, but she also realizes that she currently has an important task at hand.
“I need to become a better leader this year,” Brooks said. “I need to show the team that we can never give up, because we can definitely make a run this year.”
According to junior guard Shannon Smith, Brooks already possesses strong leadership qualities.
“Anya leads by example,” Smith said. “She’s always committed to getting better, and that makes us motivated also.”
According to Brooks, this infectious atmosphere has built South into one of the best rosters she’s ever been a part of.
“My expectations for South are high this year,” Brooks said. “I believe we have a strong team, and can do better than a lot of previous South seasons.”
