Q&A Student Services Secretary: Mrs. Mendoza

Jackson Lapp, Staff Writer

Q: What brought you to work with Student Services at PSHS?
A: Originally, it was because I had a small son, and the hours were perfect for a working mom. You get off early, you have the same days off. It made it easy for childcare. But once I got the job, then it was because I love the community and loved working with the school. I started out at Meadowview, where I actually worked at when it opened up; I started out with little kids, so I came from first and second graders up to high school. I definitely like high school better.
Q: What was it like starting Meadowview?
A: There is a good side and there’s a bad side. The good side is that you can create everything from new. Everything is new and it’s wonderful to have something that’s never been used before and to give the kids all new stuff. It’s like getting a new home. The downside is that you don’t have anything to follow. You’re creating everything for the first time.
Q: What’s your favorite part of working at PSHS?
A: The kids. I feel like everyone has their strengths and weaknesses, and I have many weaknesses but I feel like one of the strengths I have is to look at each one of you guys as individuals. I think that’s the nice thing about this department, because while in other departments you tend to group, but here it is definitely more open because there is no specific reason that you’re down here, so it’s much easier to individualize you. You’re your own people and I love that. I love the kids. I love every year when you guys come in, and I’m sad when you guys all leave.
Q: What is your favorite book/genre/author?
A: Dan Brown. He’s the one that did the Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons. He’s all about taking factual history, events, architecture and artifacts, and mixes them in with a fictional story. I love that he can introduce real things that happen in history and make it interesting versus sitting a book about, say, Catholicism and the 16th century. I learn a lot by looking things up after reading his books because I found them so interesting.
