Dating in the Pandemic
The Increasing Speed of Relationships
February 24, 2022
Ever since the pandemic started, I’ve felt like people are way more eager to pursue relationships. Maybe it was the loneliness we felt in quarantine that made us this way, but I don’t know. I was mostly thinking about it because Simone Biles just got engaged, and when she was asked about how long she and her now fiance have been dating, she said something like “only two years, but it was a pandemic relationship, so it feels like five.” It’s interesting – we say that the pandemic feels like it’s been going on forever, and we say that the pandemic has aged us ten years, but it kinda seems like it actually has. So maybe we’re moving so quickly in relationships because of a sort of bonded trauma. Maybe it’s because we trust each other in a “we’re all in this together” kind of way, High School Musical style. Whatever it is, I think it’ll seriously impact what romance looks like going forward.
