On the second Monday of October, District 202 celebrates Indigenous People’s Day along with Columbus day. This year students were given a day off to celebrate the holiday.
Indigenous People’s Day was first commemorated by President Biden in October of 2021 to acknowledge the struggles of the past and present Indigenous people of America.
The second Monday of October was, and still is, to celebrate the Spanish explorer Christopher Columbus. Columbus was credited for the discovery of the New World despite the fact that Native Americans had lived there long before. Rebranding Columbus day to Indigenous people’s day is meant to provide representation for the Indigenous People and shine a light on the true, violent history of the founding of North America.
