Taking part in a myriad of different extracurricular activities, ranging from sports to being president of National Honors Society, senior Hunter Hook sets an excellent example to his peers around him.
Many members of NHS believe that Hook is doing an outstanding job as this school year’s president, Senior Brad Surwillo being a prime example.
“I believe that he does a good job as the president. He always answers questions clearly and he is very informational at all [of] the meetings,” Surwillo said.
Senior Estevan Cisneros is also a member of National Honors Society, and admires Hook’s passion as a leader.
“I [believe] that Hunter is doing a good job as NHS president. He is very well spoken during our meetings and shares useful information that the members need,” Cisneros said.
Being the president isn’t easy. Hook is faced with many tasks, but everything always goes fluently.
“As NHS president I am responsible for organizing and presenting every NHS meeting. As a group we meet once a month and it is my responsibility to make sure they run smoothly,” Hook said.
Anatomy and physiology teacher and NHS co-sponsor Sandra McKinney is very fond of Hook’s determination and ability to be great.
“Some traits that make Hunter a good student include his organizational skills, his perseverance, and his curiosity. He asks great questions when needing clarification. His attention to detail is also a great trait. As president of NHS, he is on top of organizing and planning meetings. He checks in regularly with Ms. Stashak and myself to make sure that the agenda for the meeting is ready to go and he leads all of our NHS meetings,” McKinney said.
Hook participates in many South’s afterschool programs, a feat only a few can pull off.
“I am a member of the PSHS wind ensemble, marching band, jazz ensemble, [and] the wrestling team. Outside of school, I am also the principal player of a community orchestra at Lewis University named MYSO,” Hook said.
Along with being in band, wrestling, and NHS president, Hook’s schedule consists of honors and college level courses, such as AP Physics 2 and AP Calculus BC. Unsurprisingly, this can be overwhelming, but Hook likes to be organized.
“Lately, my best tool has been Google Calendar. I’m able to schedule out my weeks in advance, which helps me schedule time to study and do homework,” Hook said.
Additionally, Hook is very kind, and is always willing to provide a helping hand to his peers around him.
“ He is always open and happy to learn new things. Whenever another student doesn’t understand a topic that he knows, he is always happy to help and explain it through,” Cisneros said.
Hook plans on continuing his education after high school by attending a highly selective school, with just an 11% acceptance rate.
“After high school I intend on going to the US Naval Academy in hopes to become a SWO Nuclear Engineer,” Hook said.
Hook is a superb role model to students at South. Not only does he excel in his studies as a scholar, but his array of extracurriculars prove his passion and Cougar pride.
“He is a hard worker and always turns his work in on time, and he is nice to everyone,” Surwillo said.
