Released on Jan. 31, Companion was one of the best thrillers I have ever seen. It got a much deserved 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. The rated R Sci-Fi thriller had me and my friends leaning towards the massive movie screen. The main character Iris finding out that she’s a robot is not even one of the main twists in this rollercoaster of a movie- there’s many surprises that make the movie really fun.
The writing is naturally scripted, making for a believable character situation. Iris’s “boyfriend”, Josh, is written especially well. He gives off such nice guy energy that for a good majority of the movie that the audience kind of pities him. In short- he’s so painfully pathetic you can tell he’s human and therefore viewers are instinctively empathetic towards his behavior.
The actors are so good at bringing the story alive. The actress for Iris, Sophie Thatcher, portrays Iris in such a carefully calculated, it really seems like she is a machine. Thatcher’s artificial movements are so uncanny it just adds so much to the overall tone of the movie.
The camera and visual effects are phenomenal and bring in such an excitingly terrifying atmosphere. It seems like every single choice made for this movie was to set up the perfect environment for a great story. Overall the makeup, clothing, effects, and prop placement all create a conclusive thriller. With such amazing actors and beautiful staging, this is the perfect non-cliché romance.
