Summer is approaching and many teenangers 16 years and up have started to look for jobs. However, students report this year has been harder to both find and keep one. Students heading to college in the fall are finding themselves preparing resumes and cover letters.
According to the website Indeed, some things to look for when applying for summer jobs include researching the role you are applying for and asking follow up questions to show you are interested. Highlight your skills, experiences, and accomplishments relevant to the job description as well. These things can reveal that you have experience and know what to do.
Indeed says to list your previous jobs if you have any. If this is your first job, showcase skills that might show interest. Job applicants can also list educational achievements, starting each bullet point with a strong action verb.
“I have been wanting to apply for a job, but I don’t know what can make me a stand out candidate,” said Dyonna Hunter, junior.
The resume should include your name, email address and phone number. You can always ask your counselor about a job permit and the steps you need to take to receive one.
Other tips include showing positive body language (posture) at the interview, asking and inquiring questions, dressing appropriately, being on time (arrive a little early), and making eye contact. Make sure to bring a copy of your resume, and do a little research on the company you are applying for as well.
“I recently made my resume and using Indeed was very helpful with making sure I had everything I needed!” said Hunter.
A way to go about attire for an interview is business professional or business casual. Some things like a blazer, blouse, dress pants, collared/button down shirt could work in your favor. Try to avoid athletic shoes as well. Always make sure you show confidence walking into the interview. It will show that you are a good candidate for the job.
