Every morning at 5:50 a.m., P.E teacher Shantel Eagan leads a workout class for fellow teachers at Plainfield South.
The sessions started in 2012 when Eagan started considering how she didn’t have the chance to know many of the teachers outside of the athletic hallway. Once she got approval, the sessions quickly became a tradition considering group fitness is something she’s always done.
The sessions include going to the weight room, doing yoga, working on mobility, cardio work, and more.
“Sometimes we go to the outside track and even do goofy things like running the pacer,” Eagan said.
The class does a variety of activities not only in school, but outside of school. The group would meet up some weekends and even over the summer to go on hikes, paddle board, and even bungee fitness.
This group doesn’t only focus on fitness but on each other. The bonds formed are one of the things that Eagan emphasizes. For her, seeing everyone both in and outside of school and making friendships all while getting fit is the best part.
“This class pushes me to be the best version of myself, and I can only hope I push each individual to be the best version of themselves,” Eagan said.
Many participants of the group have been with Eagan for years. One of these participants includes Ashley DeLange.
Previously, the sessions varied from before school and after school. This year was the first year that all sessions are in the morning and DeLange prefers this change.
“I’m not a morning person, but I feel like I’m a better teacher to my first period class because I have more energy and just the right intention for the day,” DeLange said.
There are other teachers who like getting the workout out of the way in the morning. Jason Acevedo, another regular, started going to the classes to make a healthier lifestyle change.
“When you talk to other trainers outside of the school about the variety she offers, people are pretty amazed,” said Acevedo.
DeLange also sees the group as a very positive space that keeps you accountable. There’s a diverse amount of teachers from different departments that attend.
DeLange encourages students to take advantage of their gym classes and the opportunities they have to be active.
“Any [staff member] is welcome to join, and I give lots of options. So beginner exercisers through advanced it doesn’t matter who you are, you can always come and join our group and we’d love to have them,” Eagan said.
