Q&A with Associate Principal

Kelly Powers, Features Editor

Q: How long have you been at south? A: This is my fourteenth year at Plainfield South. I was a science teacher first, and was in science for 10 years. Then I became the assistant athletic director, then I was a dean and now I’m the associate principal.

Q: What made you want to become an administrator? A: I got into administration because I wanted to have an impact on more than just the students in my classroom. As a teacher, you can impact about 150-200 students every day. Which is nice but I wanted to have a little more impact on students. So as a dean, I got to work with about 600 students, and now as the associate principal I get to work with 2,600 students.

Q: What does your job entail on a day to day basis? A: I have a wide variety of things that I am responsible for. The first thing I’m responsible for is doing teacher observations. I’m also responsible for a lot of testing, like AP testing, outcome exams, and I used to do PARCC testing. I have to set up the schedules, find proctors, find a space to take the test and to make sure that we start on time, stop on time, and ensure that we follow all of the rules. I look at data and then I try to help come up with interventions and ways to help students.

Q: How would you describe your time here at South? A: I have really enjoyed my time here at Plainfield South, it’s almost like my second home.

Q: What have been some of your best memories here at South? A: When I was in the classroom, I really enjoyed watching my students succeed and graduate. I have really enjoyed having students come back and visit and say hello. And these last two years I have really enjoyed working with the teachers on our institute days when you guys aren’t here. We actually have a good time working together. There’s a lot of good people here.
