Season outlook: Commitment to excellence

A team emitting efficient chemistry is bound for success.
But, the boys’ basketball team last year demonstrated what a lack of chemistry can do for a team atmosphere.
“Chemistry issues were present last year,” senior guard Hunter Goorsky said. “I noticed that a lack of consistency for attendance at practice was one of the biggest reasons as to why.”
According to Goorsky, having teammates that show up to every practice and game creates a stronger bond throughout the organization, consisting of confidence and belief.
“Building stronger bonds can improve our team game, and lead us to winning several games,” Goorsky said.
The Cougars finished last year with a record of 5-23 (2-12 conference).
According to head coach Tim Boe, the Cougars definitely improved over the off-season, and are hungry to seek appreciation.
“Our core guys are pretty young,” Boe said. “We are more seasoned this year and looking forward to working hard and gaining respect in our area and in our conference.”
Junior guard Anthony Marmolejo, a part of the Cougars’ “core,” speaks of his motivation for the upcoming season.
“We’re definitely going to be better than last year,” Marmolejo said. “All we’ve been doing is working this off-season.”
According to Marmolejo, the Cougars’ off-season included open-gym and team workouts three days a week.
“We also have taken a page from our state-ranked cross-country team, and been putting in some great conditioning work before school days,” Boe said.
According to Boe, this is one of his favorite parts of the season: seeing the jump players make in performance from season to season by dedicating themselves to getting healthier and stronger.
“Being a part of these little things show how I can lead by example,” Goorsky said. “That’s my focus this year, because I need to show my team that I’m committed.”
Com mitment is an important aspect from individuals on a team; the same goes for the team’s fan section.
“We expect to have a team that’s easy to root for,” Boe said. “Our Blue Crew was awesome this fall season, and our team is excited to have them there for the basketball games.”
