Out with the old, in with the new

First-year South teacher Kyle Black replaced Leah Carter as the new head tennis coach.
When the decision came up to choose a new head coach, Black’s tennis history was an appealing trait.
“I began playing tennis around six or seven, and played all the way up to the varsity level in high-school,” Black said.
Black’s proficient background was easily recognized by players across the organization.
“Us players were never really used to a coach who would actually hold a tennis racquet during practice,” senior Grace Michel said. “He actually could play tennis, and he enjoyed it.”
According to Black, he intentionally kept practices relaxed in order to keep the girls positively motivated.
“Honestly, I only played tennis to become a sociable person, and to stay physically active,” Michel said. “However, this season has totally changed my perspective of tennis. I really enjoy it!”
According to junior Jamiah Sanders, the impact of Black on the team was incredible.
“Definitely something that stood out was how much the team improved in just two short months,” Sanders said. “It was quite awesome, because we did so much and it showed during conference play.”
Michel knows her tennis career is sadly over, but she now understands the direction of Cougar tennis.
“Whether we win or lose, he (Black) always has a positive mindset and leaves a great influence on the team,” Michel said. “He will truly improve the girls’ tennis program. It’s so great to see someone care so much about the game.”
