With the season coming to an end in February, the cheer team encountered success while also battling to say goodbye to their seniors.
The cheer team participated in several competitions, some including the Oswego Invitational, Coed Challenge, Buffalo Grove Invitational, Bengal Invite, Huntley Sweetheart Invite, Conference and Sectionals. The team placed seventh out of 10 at sectionals and although only the top 5 go to state, the team is proud of what they were able to accomplish this season.
“Our favorite competition was definitely sectionals,” senior Sophia Gjerde said. “It was the first time we hit all of our stunts and our pyramid as we did not hit it at all the week prior at practices. The hard work, as we were tired, helped make us hit it when it mattered most.”
The team was presented with various setbacks from the beginning of the season, with one common issue being the relationship between the girls on the team. According to some of the upper class girls, several conflicts between girls on the team got in the way, preventing the team from fully being able to come together.
“We faced a lot of issues and setbacks as a team that prevented us from growing to the best of our abilities,” senior Evelyn Meyers said. “After 8 seasons and 4 years in this program, I truly wish we could’ve made it to State to show off our routine. As a senior, I hope the team will be able to put the past behind them and become the amazing team I know they can be.”
Despite the season not ending the way many had hoped, they took part in a senior night, where members arrived with their parents and had the chance to be recognized and walk with them as well as receive posters and written notes made by their teammates. The team had the opportunity to perform a routine choreographed by the seniors and celebrate their time cheering. They also participated in the banquet held a week later, where all athletes and their families from the football and competition season were invited. During this banquet, they enjoyed a meal together and received certificates.
With the season coming to an official end, the team is now shifting their focus on preparations for next year. The team focused on building morale through many activities such as a team picnic, media day, Cheersgivmas, team-building games, and creating TikToks.
“I’d like the focus to be on continuously striving to be the best version of ourselves, both on and off the mat,” Drake said. “This means fostering personal growth, maintaining a strong work ethic, and supporting one another as a team.”
Some of the upper-class cheerleaders said they faced challenges with finding a consistent coaching staff. There have been 8 different coaches in the last 4 years for both JV and Varsity combined, which has become an issue and common conversation amongst the team.
Yet, the team was able to address the challenges at hand through open team discussions, as well as revisiting their core values, and setting goals in order to stay motivated and focused.
“Be kind to your teammates because they’re the ones who have your back,” Meyers said. “Work hard for what you want because nothing is handed to you. And make memories and friendships, because that’s what it’s all about.”
