Modernization has been a debatable trend. While some believe we shouldn’t try to change things, it’s important to recognize the benefits.
Take South’s renovations for example. From a room of regular brown tables to one of a variety of seating arrangements, coordinating colors, and even outlets, South has done quite a bit of renovating as of lately.
Rooms once filled with carpet now have tile floors, making it easier to clean up any messes. Passes have gone from paper to online.
Keeping up with trends is how businesses stay relevant. Even if a place is known for its signature look, it can only be popular for so long before it’s no longer in style for the time period.
The Barnes and Noble by Louis Joliet Mall, for example, has renovated its store. The layouts and set up of the books are often influenced by social media. This is an example of a business knowing their consumers and trying to keep up with what they want.
Chipped paint, faded colors, and out of style trends aren’t always the most appealing. A bit of remodeling goes a long way. Brighter colors can make a difference for the mood.
It’s not only about looks but also convenience. Fast food restaurants make it easy to customize your order with the self-order machines. Not only does it make it easier to see exactly what you’re ordering, but it also benefits those who may not want to talk to others.
The technology that schools have switched to lately benefits students as well. Giving them a choice between writing or typing gives them further control of their education.
While the old may be missed, we shouldn’t dislike the new simply because it isn’t what we’re used to. We can embrace the new while still taking inspiration from older trends.

Many students have taken note of the recently updated walls, floors, and lunchroom at South, which were completed over the summer. These new aesthetic additions provide students with a more pleasant-looking school. However, some may think that this modernization of preexisting aspects may have been unnecessary. Modernization is not only nonessential in many situations, but it can also be harmful when human interaction is compromised through the attempt to modernize.
As Securely becomes more widely utilized and implemented in the school community, it becomes increasingly apparent that these online passes may deprive students of interaction with their teachers, even if it is a small exchange of words, such as asking to leave the room.
Though South has updated its look and policies, it’s not the only place that has done so. The most recent and popular example of modernization remodelling would have to be Cracker Barrel. The company wished to change its logo and the interior of its locations as a way to refresh and modernize the company, but it was met with much backlash from its patrons, claiming that the minimalist logo design took away the nostalgic feeling.
Regarding the technology involved in modernization, self-checkout kiosks have now become generalized and are usually expected at any given business. Though the self-checkout can be a helpful tool to some, it deprives people within a community of human interaction.
Through human interaction, we improve our cognitive functions, reduce our loneliness, and foster crucial brain development. Without human interaction, these effects will not take place, and it could harm our society as a whole.
