From June 8th through July 2nd 2015, District 202 will offer a Chinese immersion class for students entering grades 5th through 9th. Hosted at Plainfield North High School, students taking this non-credited class will have a chance to learn about the Chinese culture and language through a special immersion program. There will be a maximum of two classes with offered with up to 20 students each so signing up is on a first come first serve basis.
This class is a part of STARTALKing, a federal government-subsidized language program which is part of the National Security Language Inactivate (NSLI) which exists to help Americans effectively speak different languages.
“District 202 is excited to offer this wonderful enrichment program to our students once again this year, to help broaden their cultural horizons and increase learning opportunities,” said Dr. Dan McDonnell, District 202’s director for high school curriculum and instruction.
According to District 202, students taking this class will be able to get a head start on learning to read, write, listen, and type Chinese, something that is not offered as a class at any of the high schools. This course gives students an enriching experience that will help them develop a global vision, sensitivity to foreign cultures, and a lifelong interest in learning Chinese. This is also an experience that is enriching and fulfilling.
The classes will be held June 8 through July 2 and meet Monday through Thursday 8a.m. to 1:30p.m. Any student’s interested in taking this class need to resister by May 29 with a form and an $80 nonrefundable payment. Checks should be made out to Plainfield School District 202.
