Are age-gap relationships in high school acceptable in society? Some may say yes, they are 100 percent acceptable, while others are alarmed by the jump in age. For example, when a person sees a couple holding hands in the hallway who both seem to be in the same grade, they may not suspect anything is awry. But what if that couple was a sophomore and a senior? Then they may receive some sideways glances.
“[Teen and adult relationships are] so different. The teen level in younger years, if you look at life [as] a percentage, when you’re 15, three years is one-fifth of your life. If you are 40 years old, three years isn’t even a tenth of your life. Which isn’t much time at all [for adults],” said science teacher Jennifer Woods.
In Illinois, the age of consent is 17, but it varies from state to state across the country. Illinois state laws 105 ILCS 110/3:10 and 720 ILCS 5/11-1.60 cite that if you date someone under the age of consent, it can be considered aggravated sexual assault or statutory rape, and a person who breaks one or both of these state laws, can be placed under arrest.
“[Age-gap relationships in high school] very much depends on how big the age gap is. If it is a year, I don’t really mind that much; however, if it’s like two or more [years], it’s more than just an age gap at that point. There is a huge jump in maturity [levels] between the two different people,” said sophomore Jay Picard.
According to a newspaper article from Santa Fe High in New Mexico, published in March of 2025, students go through many changes as they face a crossroads in life, and immature people gradually gain maturity. Freshmen can be stressed due to the shift from middle school to high school and the maturity they need to gain with the sudden change in environment.
The writer of the Santa Fe article, Daniel Dou, writes about how when freshmen go into their sophomore year of high school, the majority of students mature and become less rowdy and less inattentive to their classwork. Once students get to their junior year of high school, they become more stressed out about their grades, due to the SATs or ACTs, and college applications are coming up soon, or some students are already applying to college.
“I feel like the age gap [relationships] in high school is important because a senior who is turning into a legal adult shouldn’t be dating someone who is just entering high school. I believe that the max that [an age gap relationship should be] is either a year below or above,” said senior Aaden Aldarondo.
Within a student’s senior year, they are not required to take the same number of classes that other students in other grade levels do, but they do have more responsibilities. Seniors have to look at their college applications, their possible future professions, and their upcoming way of life.
With all the stress seniors are under, they are required to mature even more so than many of the underclassmen. Overall, relationships with an age gap in high school can be debated with the reasons including the differences in maturity as well as the legality of the age difference.
