The freshman boys basketball team held a long, undefeated streak of 19-0.
Coach Alan Alexander placed an emphasis on working together as a team and singular unit when playing.
“They know their playing time is based on practice. It’s based on school. It’s based on the discipline that they have throughout the building. You know, it’s not just playing time. They actually have to earn it,” Alexander said.
One of the freshmen, Jeremiah Johnson, expressed how he felt about his team.
“They’re really good teammates; we can all work together,” Johnson said.
The coach and players have expressed how they enjoyed this season. Players especially have enjoyed practice, games, and bus rides together.
The team unfortunately lost to Bolingbrook January 27th but Coach Alexander said they’re learning from their mistakes. Alexander admits that while they had their ups and downs, it’s still been a great season for them.
“Coming out of junior high, a lot of times these kids think they know everything. [It’s] just getting them out of certain habits.[…] That’s how they prepare and mature for the varsity season once they get there,” Alexander said.
As freshmen, they’re still learning skills and reaching their full potential.
“Sometimes if we’re down we try to do everything by ourselves but we’re starting to get better at working as a team,” Johnson said.
These athletes keep each other going. They remind each other of their strengths and weaknesses.
“If we ever feel down [we] cheer [each other] up and keep our heads up,” Small forward Devontey Smith said.
These players don’t just win these games but they show other schools what South’s coaches have taught them.
“You [athletes] are representing the school for more than just academics. You are outside of the building more than the average student. [You’re] being a product and wearing the Plainfield South colors,” Alexander said.
Overall, Alexander is preparing them to succeed in the varsity season once they get there.
“I know we had a good season, I had fun playing with these guys,” Smith said.
