As spring sports kick off, the varsity boys tennis team is back on the courts, rackets in hand and eyes on the season ahead. Returning players bring experience, while newcomers push to earn varsity spots. The team hopes to improve not only their total score, aiming for a 0.500 record by the end of the season, but also their overall competitiveness.
The team is in preseason, focusing on footwork, volleys, and serves. Preseason is more than practice; it is a time to form habits, sharpen skills, and prepare the team before the season begins on March 2.
Coach Tom Perrin, in his fourth season, said this year’s squad has strong potential.
“We have some good experienced players coming back, and I anticipate that we will have some excellent senior leadership,” Perrin said.
Coming into the season, they plan on pushing their senior leadership to change how the team operates.
“Right now, it is about setting the tone for the season. We want players to push each other, learn from every point, and carry that mindset into every match once the season starts,” said Perrin.
Senior Jonah Powell said his team’s energy extends beyond practice.
“Every practice is a chance to get better and have fun with my team. Being a senior is going to be emotional, but I want to enjoy every practice and every match one day at a time,” Powell said. He added that his focus is on doubles, conditioning, and keeping the team competitive while creating memories with teammates.
Preseason has been about more than skill. Last year, the team finished with a balanced record, and many key seniors returned. Perrin said he wants to improve the dual match record and compete at a higher level.
“Behind the numbers lies [a] deeper story. It is [about] growth, leadership, and building a culture that will last beyond a single season,” Perrin said.
Senior captain Shivam Goswami said he prepares by reviewing shots, watching opponents, and adjusting his game.
“I want to break my personal win record from last year, and I also want to enjoy my final year with my teammates,” Goswami said. His preseason dedication, from workouts to summer camp, has set the tone for improvement and leadership.
For the players, the preseason has been about more than results. Practices focus on individual improvement, with athletes working to refine their technique and strengthen their mental approach to the game. Even while training separately at times, there is still a sense of shared motivation as everyone pushes toward the same goal.
Looking ahead, Perrin said he hopes fans notice more than points scored.
“I want people to see a team that fights for every point, supports each other, and enjoys the game. If we can do that, we have already won in a way that matters,” he added. The energy on the court, camaraderie in practice, and shared goals point to a season that could define these players’ high school tennis experience.
That mindset of growth and competition will guide the team as they enter official matches, carrying lessons from preseason into every point and rally.
