ABC 7 news selected Plainfield South for their well-known school flyover on Friday September 18. Reporter Stacey Baca of ABC 7 News visited South to witness the school’s pride on live national television as well as explain the process of selecting schools.

“We get to go to high schools from all over the suburbs and show off the best parts of every single school,” said Baca. “I believe you got in touch with us.  There was this huge movement saying ‘hey come out to our school!’” She also mentioned how ABC is interested in schools that show a lot of excitement and energy, like South.

The predicted thunderstorm prevented the event from occurring in the football stadium as initially planned. This did not stop South from participating in the flyover though. South moved the event inside and displayed their pride in many ways.

From 5:30 a.m. until 6:50 a.m., students chanted, the band played an assortment of songs, and everyone waited while the gymnasium began to fill.

Once the bleachers topped capacity, the gym became very loud and full of pride. Baca got the crowd roaring, filling the air with an electric energy and excitement.

“Oh it [was] crazy. [There was] a lot of school spirit. I [loved] it,” said senior Jacob Buchner. He and another senior Deantre Deyoung said it was amazing, but they thought the event could have been held at a better time, seeing staff, students and community woke as early as 3:45 a.m.

“I think it went great. Even though it got rained out the students and community still showed up.  We got the superintendent, staff, and everybody to come inside, and I think this was as much fun as it would have been outside,” said Principal Bob Yanello.

Students and staff alike got involved in the excitement of the flyover. People were seen dancing happily during the interludes between filming, including English teacher Hannah Christie.  Students went wild when the poms’ team and cheerleaders started throwing shirts into the crowd.

Staff also provided a healthy breakfast for students who came to the flyover event. Muffins, water, yogurt, and milk were all handed out for free to students and staff who showed up.
