Boys’ varsity soccer tries to pick up where they left off last season, gain conference title

After losing thirteen seniors from last year, the boys’ varsity soccer team comes into their 2015 season with a wide variety of skilled athletes. Every player on the team has their own responsibility, and the changes from last year’s squad to this year’s is causing a shift in positions and leadership.

“It’s going to be a bit of a learning experience. From the beginning just figuring out which players are going to perform the best in what positions, but hopefully we can build as the season progresses,” said head coach David Brown.

Brown is trying to build the team around the three captains: Rocky Del-Real, Chase Cleasby and Wyatt Gallt. These seniors were chosen as captains in the pre-season and are familiar with the varsity experience. Expectation wise, Brown looks forward to the season ahead with confidence.

“As a program, we typically have three goals every season, which are to compete in the conference championship, win the Lincoln-Way Invite, and advance further in the state playoffs,” Brown said.

On August 24, in their win against Lincoln-Way Central, the boys showcased that they are a force to be reckoned with and are willing to fight against more competitive teams in the state. But in order for the boys’ varsity soccer team to advance into the post-season, they have to get past their six conference games.

“Those games are always very competitive and very challenging games because everybody is fighting to win the conference championship, and in most years all of the teams are equal or very even in talent,” said Brown.

According to Brown, whoever makes the least amount of errors on the soccer field usually wins the conference, and South aims for perfection this year.
