If you can’t find her at school participating in either Spanish Honors society or NHS, Annie Meyer can be found baking away making croissants or her signature chocolate cake. If she’s not baking she’s at MMA (mixed martial arts), where she does Muay Thai (a form of kickboxing with elbow and knee strikes and jiu jitsu), she is either coaching or training her students.
“I love spending my free time doing hobbies,” Meyer said. “I have a lot because I value the importance of being well-versed in anything I do. My favorite hobby is baking: my most memorable accomplishment in baking is making croissants and a beautiful french meringue buttercream icing for my signature chocolate cake.”
Meyer is not just academically driven, but she is also an athlete. Having never been in tennis before, Meyer made the team her junior year and continued to play as a senior. She was introduced to tennis after taking a hiatus from MMA.
“I’ve never played before so I was surprised to make the varsity team my first year,” Meyer said. “My teammates recognized me as captain of the tennis team senior year; I was so flattered and I’m eternally grateful for my teammates this season.”
Accepted into The University of Chicago, her dream school, Meyer plans on double majoring in business economic and global studies. If time and her schedule allows it, she intends to minor in biochemical engineering. Alongside her dreams to study at UC, she plans to study abroad.
“I’ll be studying abroad in Hong Kong and Paris for my majors, and I’d like to study in Spain to pursue my interest in the Spanish language. My dream is to move to Greece after college,” Meyer said.
Amongst her peers and teachers Meyer is known for her confidence, her passion and curiosity, as well as her enthusiastic approach to wanting to learn and grow. According to her teachers, she’s constantly willing to jump into class discussions, as well as bring quieter voices into class conversations.
“Annie was always a benefit to her classmates,” Physics teacher Ben Wittenkeller said. “Her positive attitude and work ethic will take her far in life. One memorable situation was when her team built a really impressive water rocket. It flew quite far, sadly I don’t have a video of that flight.”
Meyer not only projects confidence, but she presents the vibe of someone who has it put together. She’s outgoing, friendly, and inquisitive. To many, she is one of the most self-possessed teenagers some have come across according to several of her teachers.
“Annie is the kind of person that if you found out she was heading to space or running for president, you wouldn’t even blink,” English teacher Nicole Robilotta said. “She’s always got her eyes on something bigger.”
